Fringing field stretching of a pillared liquid crystal droplet
We demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) droplet whose surface profile could be deformed by a fringing field. In the voltage-off state, the LC droplet exhibits a pillared shape by touching both substrates. As the voltage increases, such a droplet could be stretched to a cone-like shape or thin film. For a 1.5 mm aperture LC droplet, its occupied area could be expanded by ∼4.3× at 6.5 Vrms μm−1. Upo...
متن کاملNematic-isotropic phase transition in a liquid-crystal droplet.
Possible phases in a nematic liquid crystal confined to a spherical submicrometer droplet embedded in a solid polymer are analyzed in terms of a Landau — de Gennes theory. For a droplet with a radial structure we show that the strength of the nematic-polymer interfacial interaction affects the nematic-paranematic (partially ordered isotropic phase) phase transition and may in addition induce a ...

متن کاملOrdered droplet structures at the liquid crystal surface and elastic-capillary colloidal interactions.
We demonstrate a variety of ordered patterns, including hexagonal structures and chains, formed by colloidal particles (droplets) at the free surface of a nematic liquid crystal (LC). The surface placement introduces a new type of particle interaction as compared to particles entirely in the LC bulk. Namely, director deformations caused by the particles lead to distortions of the interface and ...
متن کاملDirect-writing of complex liquid crystal patterns.
We report on a direct-write system for patterning of arbitrary, high-quality, continuous liquid crystal (LC) alignment patterns. The system uses a focused UV laser and XY scanning stages to expose a photoalignment layer, which then aligns a subsequent LC layer. We intentionally arrange for multiple overlapping exposures of the photoalignment material by a scanned Gaussian beam, often with a plu...
